The University Campus is situated at Malda which is a historic town of undivided Bengal, previously known as “GOUR”.

GOUR: Glimpses of History

Today's GOUR was a Buddhist dynasty named as “Pundrabardhan State” during the dynasty of Vikramaditya in 602 AD. After King Sasanka, people of gour made Gopalder as their King who bought his capital at “GOUR” on the bank of river Kalindri from “Karnasubarna”. “Rampal”, the last king of this family died in 1120 AD. Then came “Sen dynasty” in 12th century and earned fame during “Ballal Sen” and “Lakkhan Sen”. In the year 1202 AD, “Bakhtiar Khilji” invaded and owned GOUR from “Lakkhan Sen” and the Muslim dynasty started in Bengal defeating Hindus. In 1537 AD, “Shershah Suri” invaded GOUR and destroyed Hindu sculptures and structures.

The University takes care of higher education in the three districts of North Bengal namely, Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur covering a huge area as depicted below .The shaded a represents territorial jurisdiction of the University of Gour Banga within the State of West Bengal. There is an international border with Bangladesh on the eastern side and on the western side the territorial area shares border with the Indian state of Bihar. On the northern and southern sides, the area borders the districts of Darjeeling and Murshidabad respectively.
